https://anilist.co/anime/143277/UruseiYatsura2022/ Urusei Yatsura is this years remake of a beloved classic and it was pretty fun. I havent watched the classic and know nothing about this IP except the fact that it features a pikachu waifu and also the pioneer of the whole harem tropes. So after watching episode 1 more than anything I got massive Doreamon vibes. It was oddly nostalgic about a show I never watched. It all starts when a certain oni/alien invades Earth with his entire army but to reduce casualties they challenge humanity to a battle by randomly selecting one human to one oni. This random human happens to be a perverted high school boy named Ataru Moroboshi this onialien happens to be the pretty princess tigerstripped beauty named Lum and this battle happens to be the goodold fashioned Onigokko Game of Tag. After a lot of hurdles Ataru wins the game by stripping her bare naked while their battle is being telecasted to both races. Though Ataru is now recognized as the scum he is Lum however forms a deep love with him. And so starts the oddity called Urusei Yatsura. Now if that doesnt interest you something else might do but I think its definitely worth checking out. Comedy and Characters The basic format of the show is pretty simple. Here is a group of odd characters. Here is a group of odd situations. Now lets throw them together and see what chaos will happen. Thats it. I know I said this earlier but I just cant unsee the similarities to this and Doreamon. Ataru is Nobita if hes more perverted Lum is a mix of Doreamon Pikachu in waifu form Shinobu is Shizuka if she happens to love wrestling Mendo is Suniyo except he actually looks good Ataru parents are much like Nobita parents except theyre more open about their sons failure and Dakisugi... I guess we dont have someone as sane as him in this Anime. And of course since this is a harem we have a lot of female characters the shrine maiden the tomboy the school nurse the female friends of Lum their mothers... But whats a bit surprising is how much it avoided the stereotypes. For instance Shinobu couldve been the easy childhood tsundere with a good heart but she doesnt mind dating even another girl if its for money she can also be a bit bitchy at times Ran couldve been an easy Yandere but she doesnt question their friendship she just holds a grudge Sakura couldve easily been the Ara Ara onesaan but she actually has a boyfriend and the list can go on. Though not everyone got that treatment like Ryuunosuke whos still the stereotypical tomboy who wants to be more girly. The show embraces its character flaws into its oddities which makes for a bizarre and comedic ride. Though you may have to take occasional breaks on this trip. Hinges on the Binge There are two reasons why I dont recommend slapstick comedies to binge. 1. The surreality becomes a familiarity: We dont usually see people punching each other into the air or hitting someone with a comically large mallet. We dont usually see odd things to happen unless youre living in Florida or Ohio so its that sense of wonder that keeps things fresh. If you get familiar however... 2. ...it just wont be fun anymore: Once you stop having fun with the show youve basically given yourself a reason to drop it. Urusei Yatsura falls into both these flaws but one more serious flaw would be: Having no overall plot: Compare this to something like Konosuba or Grand Blue which are also Slapstick/surreal/harem humor are more engaging because they at least have mini arcs to know where its going. Urusei Yatsura is a completely episodic Anime theres something new in every episode but most of these episodes are disjointed from every other episode so it lacks that extra hook to be engaging. Miscellaneous A shoutout to David Pro and the producers for bringing some of the finest voice actors into the scene. You probably have at least one of your favorite VAs voice acted in this Anime. One more shoutout to David Pro and its animators cause anime looks gorgeous. Especially the character design and fashion are main attractions. Conclusion Might not be the most funny Anime youve ever seen or might not live to the classic but for what it is its a bizarre ride full of oddities and a heart that believes in it.
