Theres nothing wrong per se with The Hammer and thats probably the reason Im writing this review in the first place. Its to remind myself why I dropped it and why you the person reading this review might want to read or not read this yourself.
Ill be as vague as possible about the story itself because I dont have too many opinions about the content of the plot and will focus more about what it represents.
At the time of this review The Hammer has a full season out and is in the midst of the second season with 100+ chapters under its belt. This is a good enough reason to even consider reading a webcomic as having a long backlog is better than diving into a brand new series.
That being said The Hammer is mid and I mean that in the literal sense of the word. It is middle of the road. It brings nothing new to the table for someone who has read 100 regression webcomics but it also plays out the tropes in a decent enough manneralthough decent might be too soft of a curve ball.
Tiny is very average as far as protagonists go and the joke about how his name doesnt match his appearance loses any charm it may have had for a one off character pretty soon. Thankfully its not a main plot point and its only brought up a couple of times in the 80 or so chapters I got through but it makes you wonder why even call him Tiny. Its clearly not a regular name as most of the cast has vaguely medieval European sounding names so it just seems out of place. As a character though Tiny inspires no love from me. No hate either. I just feel nothing for him and thats a really bad thing for a character to be if you need to consume the entire story through their eyes.
All of the supporting cast is equally as bland. They suffer from much the same as Tiny. There is nothing new or very interesting about them so I found myself just rolling my eyes with each new archetype the writer tried to fit in. The villains are also kind of goofy for the most partand not in a good way and I just cant bring myself to care about anyone or the fate of anything.
The art is... Serviceable. Its nothing to write home about but its also not the distractingly bad. Its just that coupled with how bland the story is it does not help my drive to read more.
That being said my complaints come from a place of subjectivity. I can say all of this because Ive read so many webcomics with the same story beats that do them much better. The Hammer is just a pale imitation but if you have not read much in this genre then its an OK read. Im just personally dropping it because if I can get though 50 chapters of something and not find a single thing to look forward to when Im reading it then its just not for me.
