Lately the fantasy genre has been plagued by I got reincarnated or I was given this overpowered ability trope anime which unfortunately gives the isekai fantasy genre a bad reputation. Its a far cry from that showstopping imagination we once sawthe kind that makes you wonder what reality could be like with different races futuristic weapons and magic everything you dreamed of as a child. While a few decent or even fantastic shows do emerge from this trend and truly capture the essence of fantasy again Dungeon Meshi stands out. It doesnt truly fit the isekai label for me as theres no reincarnation or transition involved it just starts you directly in this wonderfully fantastical world. Its a refreshing anime that instantly sends your imagination soaring making you wonder about all the possible creatures you might encounter or what delicious new discovery will be shown next. There isnt a single episode that wont make you think I want what theyre having The plot builds gradually allowing for character development over the 24minute runtime of each episode. Typically the first or second half focuses on action with the other dedicated to cooking and vice versa. This clever alternation keeps every episode fresh and prevents any monotony. The anime does a fantastic job of balancing the thrilling action with the mouthwatering culinary aspects all while maintaining the immersive feel of a true fantasy world. From chickens with snake tails to formidable golems or anything else you could possibly imagine its almost all available and waiting to be discovered and possibly eaten in Dungeon Meshi. Humor and Visual Feast Beyond the unique premise the show boasts an amazing sense of comedy largely thanks to Laios Marcille and Senshi. When food is involved theres always a moment that will make you laugh out loud or find it incredibly amusing to witness. And then theres the truly stunning visual animation that Studio Trigger poured their hearts into. Every scene feels anything but bland it genuinely feels like youre a player in this world watching over the party. The sheer quality of the backgrounds and environments ensures each scene can evoke strong emotions. Its not forcedfed instead it allows you to learn and sympathize with each character to understand why they act that way how they grew up why they do what they do and even to learn their darkest moments. Considering its unique approach to fantasy engaging characters stunning animation and delightful humor I genuinely loved every bit of this anime. Overall a 10/10 for me
