07Ghost is a fascinating show that cannot seem to decide which genre it wants to be. While half of the show makes a genuineif slightly misguidedattempt to be an action/fantasy anime the second half of the show is a much slower examination of interpersonal relationships how trauma affects characters during times of war and more importantly how these characters attempt to grow past horrible experiences. Do not mistake this for praise of an emotionally deep anime. Although 07Ghost is a delight to watch with friends looking for a fun time it is ultimately lacking anything of true substance. Its not uncommon for interesting plot points and characters to be introduced but never fully explored leaving the viewer with a general sense of confusion and discontentespecially regarding any of the bigger plot reveals. The only thing of true significance in 07Ghost is how gay it is. No Im not joking. Although it is not sold as a BL anime 07Ghost is truly at its best when the writers decide to shove in as much fujobait as humanly possible. I wasand still amgenuinely floored with the choices 07Ghost made with the limited time it had. This anime never shied away from abandoning any semblance of plot it tried to weave to instead play chicken with its characters sexualities. I swear 07Ghost gets as close to making characters openly gay as it can without ever quite saying it. Every declaration of youre my friend and were buddies from the cast was met with a collective jeer from the watch party. Each time Teito looked wistfully at the sky and thought about how much he cared about Mikage became a tally point in a bingo cardyes we actually did make bingo cards to fill out with this show. Honestly it was the time spent debating with friends which moments of the show were and were not worthy of filling out a space on our BL Bingo cards that made watching 07Ghost an enjoyable experience. I would strongly recommend doing something similar if you ever become morbidly curious enough to sit down and watch this show. 07Ghost isnt a good show. Its not even a fine show. From a writing standpoint its frankly kinda terrible but I absolutely loved every second of it. Im looking forward to reading the manga to see if the fujobait persists or if it was an invention purely for the sake of the anime. tldr Do not come here looking for a cohesive plot and decent fights.
