I had a pretty good time watching this movie but it really struggles to be anything memorable. Ill try to break things down without getting too longwinded since I doubt many people are particularly eager to dig deep into this one. The movie follows a mafia boss obsessed with All Might who takes it upon himself to carry on the heros legacy. To achieve this he kidnaps a girl named Anna whose quirk can supercharge other quirks and pulls Class 1A into a fantasy world where Midoriya must team up with a mysterious sniper named Giulio to stop him.
On the positive side Giulio isnt the most vivid character but his initial resolve to kill Anna and Midoriya eventually changing his mind makes for a decent arc within the films 90minute runtime. The concept of Dark Might a villain who takes all the wrong lessons from All Might was also an interesting direction. That said he mostly felt like he was repeating the same five lines over and over. Still using the same voice actor as All Might was a genius move. The performance carried that familiar charisma weve come to expect.
On the thematic side there were substantive ideas about legacy and heroism particularly in how they contrasted Dark Mights superficial obsession with Midoriyas idealism and genuine love for his hero. The scene where Midoriya Bakugo and Todoroki each tell Dark Might what All Might means to them was genuinely powerful and I wish this dynamic had been further developed. On the other hand Giulios role as the only character to experience real growth doesnt quite align with this theme as his arc explores something entirely different. You could argue that Midoriyas heroism influences Giulio which highlights the true value of All Mights legacy but that feels like a bit of a stretch.
There were also some solid moments of combat with the heroes being pushed to use their quirks in fun and creative ways. But the final action setpiece suffered from fights being abruptly cut off almost as if the characters suddenly decided Lets just do something else. The action wasnt particularly elevated by the visuals either. The animation was serviceable and the direction got the job done but it lacked the extra polish you typically see in anime films in a postMugen Train world. Overall it felt more like an extended episode of the show than a cinematic event.
The movies biggest issue though is how it tries to include the entirety of Class 1A and several pro heroes. This leaves little room to flesh out the villains or Anna who ends up feeling more like a plot device than a character. And because its a noncanon story where the main cast cant undergo any meaningful development its frustrating to watch screen time go to characters who dont contribute much to the plot or themes.
This movie would have benefited from a tighter focus maybe just Deku and the four classmates he starts out with and dropping the whole destruction of U.A. plotline that makes the rest of the cast show up. Trap our guys along with All Might in the fantasy world and youd have a more focused and engaging setup that actually gives the characters room to breathe. Something closer in scale to Two Heroes probably would have worked a lot better.
TLDR: Feels like an early 2000s shounen movie entertaining enough but not much more than that. The kind of thing you watch once and then never think about again.
