Every once in a while I come across a manga that feels more like an elevator pitch or blueprint for something much longer as if we were given a preview of some longrunning series that never came to be despite the authors greatest intention and genuine passion for a project. This is very much one of those cases I feel.
Our story follows this random unremarkable student unless we count his hair which is supposed to be green according to the author shame we dont get to see that in the manga proper beyond like one color illustration in the rerelease from what I gather whos currently trying to do his best to get into his desired university. But then his idyllic daily life filled with studying gets interrupted by a random alien girl from planet Rlyeh.
Side note I have to admit Im puzzled as to why planets and alien currency in a random silly comedy manga are named after Lovecrafts ideas. I guess its kinda like Mortis Ghost naming characters in OFF using the Bible who said he just flipped some random pages and noted down ones that sounded cool. Rule of cool always wins and given this manga is from 2007 it sure does.
As it turns out our MC has powerful esper abilities that the planets military wants to utilize in their war against planet Yaddith. What ensues is a series of romcomesque gags where our MC has to evade attempts from the alien emissary to recruit him. And thus poor guy has to decide will he stick to his guns and continue studying in pursuit of higher education or will he accept the Rlyeh emissarys request? We get her attempts to seduce him get into his fathers good graces a fight against an alien war machine a backstory explaining why MC isnt eager to just live the life of an esper and all of that in just 7 chapters.
Heres the thing in just 7 chapters. Now there are plenty of manga that manage to cram tons of enjoyable things and pure fun in less than that any given story in Yen Samejimas Chinese Fantasy Honno Shioris short stories or the average story in Jingai no Yome to Ichaicha Suru come to mind but sadly in this case its hard not to feel a bit underwhelmed. Dont get me wrong you get a complete story characters with motivations some cool moments and it wraps up in a decently satisfying way. But it really does feel like it was meant to be more and we never got to see that complete vision the author had in mind which is a shame. Theres even a tiny bit of social commentary that had the potential to be much more characters ponder whether its better to simply be born with a talent and live a carefree life thanks to natural predisposition for something or whether its better to feel the satisfaction of your hard work finally paying off. Unfortunately we get a bit of a basic answer to that which might not be satisfying to all of you no doubt due to the story being cut short somehow.
That aside however this is nonetheless a pretty enjoyable manga. If you like any of its character designs you sure do get a beginning middle and ending. Hell theres even a bit of ecchi in the form of high kicks with pantyshots here and there if youre into that. Overall its not a bad manga by any means but its very much like a tiny sample of something that could and should have been more.
