I dont think I could write a review of this anime without spoilers so please keep that in mind before you read this review If you want to go in totally blind this review isnt a great place to start but Ill do my best to keep my spoilers vague. The best possible thing I can say to sum up the watch experience of A Centaurs Life is WTF??. If I had a nickel for every time I said that out loud at my screen while watching this I would have way more than two thats for sure. I honestly couldnt get a read on what this anime was trying to tell me. One moment it would switch from relatively progressive politics to something sexually inappropriate and the majority of these characters are high schoolers and younger and even the progressive politics were sometimes so unhinged that it felt more like satire than a genuine message pushing for racial equality. I will admit that Slice of Life isnt my favorite genre so i might be biased but the plot was nonsensical. There were a lot of things introduced that ended up leading nowhere and the final episodes gave no payoff or closure for any of the characters introduced. I will give it the benefit of the doubt and assume that the manga is more indepth but it would have been nice to see a cohesive story/arc within the 12 episodes. As it stands it feels like a setup season for a larger scale plot that didnt get realized. If it gets another season I would hope they tie up the numerous loose ends. Also half of the series had nothing at all to do with the main character? Whats the point of calling it A Centaurs Life if half of the episodes focus solely on the side characters. I like exploring their backgrounds but a lot of it felt unnecessary overall. The individual episode plots felt more like vehicles to show off the worldbuilding of the fantasy universe than an attempt to tell a story about high school girls. Specifically I see very little point in the scenes involving the frog ambassador guy and the infamous Holocaust scene with the old angel man. At the very least the scenes involving the the Chisters and Tama are related to the lives of children/young adults but I dont see how the complex political worldbuilding fits in with the rest of the premise. And what was the deal with the lizardpeople and the merpeople? It felt like that was a plot that should have been revealed at the end but it went nowhere and wasnt really mentioned again. Also while sexualizing the high school girls is gross but expected I was a bit uncomfortable with some of the scenes involving the younger kids. They were definitely skirting the edges of appropriate there to the point where it kind of felt like one of those the authors thinly veiled fetish moments. But there were a lot of moments like that in this anime so I digress. There were some positives to this one though It was really funny especially when you arent trying to seriously figure out whats going on. The casual queer representation with the lesbian background couple was nice even though the leads never got together. I liked the effort they put into translating things from normal human culture over into the fantasy version of humanity. The character designs were cute even though they were a bit cliche.A lot of the interactions between the high school girls felt pretty realistic. I would say give it a watch for the unhinged factor if nothing else.
