TLDR: Call of the Night Season 2 expands on its predecessor and delivers an superb experience that fans of the first season will enjoy immensely. It boasts a strong plot with an expressive roster of characters possessing diverse personalities and beautiful art.
Call of the Night Season 1 walked so Season 2 could run. Thats a little bit discrediting to Season 1 since it was still really good but Season 2 is where the stakes and conflicts start to take center stage and things pick up in the plot. The story is pretty tight and focused. The pacing here is actually really good theres a lot of substance in each episode and they keep things moving on in a very engaging manner. I didnt find myself bored during any episode and they all have a very distinct atmosphere and flow to them. There arent really any filler episodes in here instead Call of the Night does well in developing an engaging story and fleshing out its characters. The creation of tension leading up to the climax is very polished and the tonal shift and resolution is clean and refined executed in a way that feels very Call of the Nightesque. In particular the plot does a great job of developing the character of The Detective and elaborating on a compelling backstory for both her and Nanakusa. Flashbacks can sometimes feel slow or unnecessary in anime but here they provide actual substance and are quite captivating. As I said the stakes have been brought up from the first season and this really helps Call of the Night Season 2 to create a compelling story. It elaborates on a lot of what the first season set up so much so that it almost feels like they were developed in tandem. This story of this season was very tight and clean and its a great addition to the first season.
The characters in this season are also wellthoughtout. The dive into Nanakusas past is interesting and provides a lot more context a depth to her character so the audience feels like they know her better. The Detective is obviously another character that gets a lot of attention this season and without spoiling anything I want to say that I really appreciate the direction they brought her character in and I think they did a great job with her. Its clear that theres been thought put into the distinct personalities of the characters and this is reflected in their mannerisms behaviors and the way they talk. I do wish that we could have seen a little bit more of Yamoris friends since I think that theyre interesting characters and they dynamic between them and Yamori in the context of the story has potential to be explored further. I appreciate that the show fleshes out the side characters too but again I think theres more potential there. However given the fact that this is a one cour season and the episodes are already pretty packed with plot and character development its completely understandable why they chose to focus more on the main conflict. My complain isnt so much that I wish they did things differently but more so that I just wish we could have had more Call of the Night. And I think that really speaks to how good this show is.
I would say Call of the Night touches on some darker themes and topics this season but theyre executed in a way that doesnt feel out of place in the show. It presents a darker side to vampires and the night and the reason for The Detectives wrath against them. Because The Detectives character is executed so well it helps to give these views legitimacy and set up a contrast that really helps the central conflict. It raises some interesting questions and I think it serves up some ideas that give viewers something to think about which is good. Call of the Night manages to stretch beyond surface level entertainment and present something that feels engaging and entertaining but also more profound.
On the opposite side of deep themes you have the superficial: the art. And the art delivers yet again this season. Call of the Night is vibes. It is. The animators do a really good job giving it a distinct feel and they really do make the night come alive in this anime. The creative use of colors and the vivacious animation ensure that Call of the Night is always a pleasure to look at.
Really its hard for me to say anything but good things about Call of the Nights second season. Im very optimistic for the third season and I think this anime really goes above and beyond to deliver a great experience for viewers. 90/100.
