As someone who loves those actionsystem world setups in comics I find The Novels Extra does it quite nice mixing the mystery and action pretty nicely.
Plotwise the story was alright without worlddumping and had nice gradual integration of the worldbuilding along the story. This could be due to the simple premise for the worldbuilding itself which to be fair is common in these actionsystem world plots. There was the classic mana/magic setup along with skills and leveling up and ranking systems. However something quite unique and interesting this comic did that was quite unique was utilize a gunwielding character as the main character where most other actionsystem worlds tend to depict them as useless due to the ineffective bullets. It did try to address this disparity and acknowledge it in order to explain the main characters uniqueness in choosing to wield it yet fails to show the drawbacks or reasons why it is an unpopular weapon with the ease the main character wields it. Yes the main characters superiority even while using a gun is due to his skills but I feel they fail to drive this point home as there is lack of a foil showing exactly how other gunwielders would fare in that world and why it is unpopular.
Additionally there is also the development of a romantic subplot with Chae NaYoon which I feel is quite unnecessary and awkward although this may just be due to the manhwas inability to capture a deeper emotional portrayal. As of where I am it seems pretty onesided but Ive been traumatized enough to feel that it wont stay that way. The problem is that the author/ artist ? confused because this is the manhwa idk about the novels portrayal decided to suddenly mention the main characters desire to get closer to her in one chapter but failed to dive deeper into MCs emotional state beforehand only offhandedly mentioning detachment and emotional emptiness. I feel like it wasnt integrated into his actions enough/ woven frequent enough into the story just mentioned. Yeah so thats why imo the romantic subplot feels awkward.
The overall plot development is rather slow as of right now although Ive heard from novel readers that . Still as of right now as it seems to still be in the building up it seems pretty decent. Its easy to follow and still manages to be interesting although its probably because there is yet to be much complexity in terms of plotbuilding understandable because its still the buildup. Still very simple though borderlining on mediocre.
Characterwise I think theyre pretty simple character backgrounds as of this moment yet to have any complexity behind them. Their motivations are still stiff and kind of cardboardcut but that could be due to lack of development as of yet. Personally I like Yeo Yeonho most as she seems the most reasonable. I felt like NaYoon and Rachel kind of broke down in characterization with the introduction of the romantic subplot heavier focus on their interactions with Hajin as compared to their development as individuals so I was kind of hoping Yeonho would avoid that no need for harem development please. I have hope for NaYoon because its implied she will blacken later and hopefully leave this romantic interest role but Im still on the fence depending on how itll be handled. I also feel the captain was an infantilized character for no reason maybe therell be one presented later but as of now she comes off as some weird insert.
Artwise I think this manhwa was quite nice not using art models afaik Im afraid Im a victim of those same gossip ladies and castles although the art is very simple and not my taste. Still I can feel the artists dedication to coming up with the art loving especially how early in the comics they added concept designs and art in the bottom of each chapter. Could feel the passion coming through the art. Sadly I think they removed it after a while bring it back please I beg.
Overall: quite decent still in the setup phase of the manhwa so Im taking this with a grain of salt but it has the potential to become good. Nice for filling intime.
