Im very mixed on Cutie Honey Flash. At first it seemed to me like a strange thing to even approach with the intent to adapt it to a younger audience considering the originals yknow everything especially considering Flash was partly made by the Sailor Moon team and replacing that show in its time slot as more knowledgeable friends told me. But in a sense this has kinda supported something I also found in its original iterations that being the series genuine interest in telling if not competent at least interesting and indulgently fun and corny stories with its characters and setting. In the end I got a lot out of this show: its generally pretty its writing is decently fun Ive also enjoyed each characters newly assigned role and its action is nothing to scoff at either. I like the take of Panther Claw as a more magical fantasy group of genuine monster girls born from darkness and humanitys greed. I love Jills second form its probably the only time so far Ive actively enjoyed her monsterlike smqueen design but Im particularly fond of the second halfs trio of panther generals Freddy Claw Scud Panther and Gorgon Panther although their inclusion couldve been approached differently those latter two especially Scud go too quickly to have the impact they frankly deserved. The episodes ordering in terms of tone definitely was one of my gripes in the shows later episodes and I cant quite say the ending felt as satisfying as it could not that its my biggest gripe with the show. Something Ill give in favor to the large amount of episodes is its fluctuating status quo. While nothing phenomenal it was pretty interesting to see the story develop be it the developments Honey herself goes through accentuated by the delay some key events from the original story were given without affecting the stakes or Panther Claws changes in hierarchy and inner conflicts. It didnt quite end up building to a satisfying ending but that didnt taint my experience as a whole. I think the bulk of the problems I had with this show come up to Prince Zera and almost entirely because of the Misty Honey arc. The fact that hes redeemed so easily despite basically causing irreparable damage to Honey and that his characterization is inconsistent both before and after the arc really feels more like a contrivance to keep him as a viable romantic rival and overall supportive prettyboy to Honey throughout the show its infuriating how many times he seemingly dies only to come back to spout some fuckass power of love speech or halfbaked metaphor. I have my other little bugs of course the toy integrations namely the Rouge Arrow if thats how that stupid things called always just kinda piss me off in just how blatant the toy is with how obviously they clash with other visual elements. Similarly the special attacks and the transformation sequence of Honeys second form in the latter half always had me rolling my eyes but what can you do I get that theyre useful and that this show was intended to be watched with longer breaks between episodes. What I did find genuinely underwhelming was Honeys voice: its overall good in most regular and action scenes but she really loses on charisma when it comes to chanting her famous Honey Flash and other special attacks. Some audio flourishes like echo or other effects I think couldve helped. In the end do I recommend this? Frankly I would say so far it is the best and most wellrounded Cutie Honey Ive watched so far but perhaps its not entirely true to the average experience of this show. Still a fun time and not a bad introduction or sole experience of the franchise. Total Screenshots: 155 almost entirely Panther Claw a surprisingly high amount of which are Freddy Claw
