If you enjoy cute girls doing cute things this is a series for you Kemono Friends is a series with a bit of a turbulent history. It started as a mobile game but grew in popularity due to its anime adaptation. While the original game of the same name has long since been gone the series has expanded into many other mediums including this manga. The Kemono Friends manga offers a quick way to get into the franchise and familiarize yourself with the characters and story. The story follows Nana a new trainer in Japari Park. Throughout the story Nana meets all of the animal girls in Japari Park known as Friends. Most of the plot centers around their interactions as Nana attempts to train them particularly Red Fox. For those who have seen the anime already the manga acts as somewhat of a bonus story due to the fact that it actually takes place before the show and is likely within the context of an alternate timeline. This manga includes bonus chapters bonus art and staff commentary. Due to its position within the timeline of the series there is not much continuity with the anime. Most of the Friends in the manga have different personalities in comparison to the anime. Story: 6/10 Most of the manga presents itself in the slice of life format. There is still a plot but it isnt a priority. The chapters largely consist of cute girls doing cute things. That being said the story only acts as an explanation for the setting and thus isnt too big of a concern. This manga would still feel the same whether there was a context for the setting or not. Art: 8/10 The art in this manga is drawn by Fly. Unlike the anime which uses a chibi art style and CGI the manga presents a more traditional humanoid art style. Though not always super detailed Flys artwork gives the manga a distinct visual identity with many beautifully drawn scenes throughout. Even in panels where not much is happening the art stays consistent in its quality and presentation. Characters: 8/10 The characters are undeniably the biggest strength of Kemono Friends. Everyone has a distinct personality. Even with just 21 chapters there is noticeable character development. There is also no shortage of running gags to be found with certain characters or places having their own tropes. The Friends of Japari Park are integral to the series and all of them have a role to play in it. Overall Score: 7/10 Kemono friends is a wonderful manga and you can read the entirety of it relatively quickly. While the story itself takes a back seat there is still enjoyment to be found in observing the daily lives of the characters. Whether it be through the wonderful artwork or through the comedic value Kemono Friends is a charming series that offers something for everyone.
