Ill start by saying that if youve finished Wing there is no reason not to watch this so just do it. There will be spoilers in this review. Wing had a fairly conclusive end so I was curious how they were going to continue things in Waltz. They ended up continuing it about the best they possibly could and gave us an even more conclusive feeling ending It literally ends with the narrator saying that mobile suits were never used again and they had peace and it was great. Wing didnt end on a dark note or anything but Waltz still ends up feeling so much more uplifting and hopeful with basically everyone in the wrong realizing the errors of their way in the end excluding Dekim who takes the role of the unrepentant Grinch in this Christmas tale. Mariemaia is a bit derivative of Mineva They even both start with M and end with a. Shes the rightful heir of Trieze being puppeteered by Dekim Kinda like Mineva and Haman although Mariemaia has never been in a position to feel true fear compared to Mineva who was a bit of a coward. Honestly the biggest issue with this being a movie is that the new characters the antagonists Mariemaia and Dekim and their faction didnt get much time to breathe and properly establish themselves. This leaves them feeling a bit underdeveloped compared to Trieze and Zechs and OZ/Romefeller. Also I cant take their uniforms seriously. The M logo is completely ruined by Mario and McDonalds who together make it impossible for me to take a faction that just uses an M as their insignia on uniforms seriously. The action was decent throughout the movie budget definitely gets showed off. Though there isnt really a good final fight. By the end Wufei has discovered the meaning of Christmas and stopped being evil and he was kinda the only Ace pilot in the Mariemaia army I think the only named pilot too now that I think about it. Wufeis upgrade from being basically useless to the plot into being an active antagonist whos still basically useless was something. Hes kinda my least favourite gundam pilot and this movie didnt exactly help with that. Im still not 100 on what exactly his reason for siding with Mariemaia initially was. Hes just not as interesting or entertaining as the others. That said Wufei is involved in the best scene in the movie. The one where he appears from no where with a sword. Overall Endless Waltz was a good ending to Wing kinda strange considering the name. Probably the most hopeful ending to any Gundam thing Ive watched. People often brand any movie set during or around Christmas to be a Christmas movie e.g. diehard but Endless Waltz does actually feel like one. It captures that same feel good spirit that you want from a Christmas movie. The ending where everyone basically comes together to stop fighting even the Mariemaia army soldiers throwing down their weapons to embrace was a perfect finale for a series obsessed with the ideals of total pacifism.
