English
Published in 2018 this work is part of the oneshots released during the production of DDDD At 43 pages it is longer than other oneshots by the author from that same period such as 1999 Moshimo Tokyo or Rabuka. At the same time I find it more narratively interesting than those which is why I chose to dedicate a full review to it.
Its themes are recurring throughout Inios body of work: parenthood nostalgia uncertainty about the future and disconnection. Its context adds an additional layer of interest as it presents a story that compares two situations across three generations showing how similar vices once repudiated and avoided end up repeating themselves even without intention or acceptance. The protagonist fits Inios archetypal standards: he lives with the contradiction of having escaped his rural hometown in search of urban meaning only to find that over the years that meaning has slipped away leaving him to take refuge in the idea that one must simply keep going.
It is during his visit back to what was once his home symbolically his past that he realizes that despite having fled he has become the very same kind of person: someone incapable of being a good example or forming a genuine connection with his own child. He even develops a certain empathy for the figure he once antagonized so strongly. Finding those similarities and measuring them against his own failures allows him to better understand the dark pit that person was trapped in and to wonder whether he himself still has a chance to overcome it especially when at such an age all that seems to remain is regret over what never was and uncertainty about how to even move forward.

As with most of his oneshots there is no explicit message but rather the presentation of a situation meant to prompt the reader to ask whether they might be able to escape such vices or whether we ourselves are already on a similar path. It is an appropriate tone considering that such corrections can take an entire lifetime. And like the chosen excuse it remains undeniably true: inevitably time will keep moving forward.
The drawing style here is closer to Reiraku than to DDDD with panels that find their greatest strength in the characters expressions discomfort resilience or that nostalgia disguised as indifference. The panel composition favors comparison using key pages to contrast characters directly or consecutive pages with similar layouts to highlight differences in habits or behavior.
There are numerous details that reinforce this focus on comparison across time: the same annual celebration close to an era change a house decorated in a classic Shwa style and of course the characters observations about how time continues to pass even when we fail to notice it. Yet within that nostalgic gaze lies the strength to make an effort toward the future to come before irreparable regret sets in and to avoid losing sight of what truly matters.
