This movie is the definition of fun I dare you to finish this movie and not be left with a dumb grin on your face.
I happened to stumble across this movie on a whim thinking hey I remember watching Transformers as a kid was that even any good? only to be very pleasantly surprised since all my previous nostalgia revisits turned out to be very disappointing to say the least. So lets dig in on this forgotten gem of my youth.
What you definitely should not expect of this movie is a very complex and intricately built plot or deep characterization. Transformers : THE movie big emphasis on THE was originally meant to be a simple toy commercial to promote a new lineage of merchandise which in retrospect explains a lot of weird creative decisions. However it has a boldness that makes the movie very memorable its like they went this is just a silly kids movie lets have some fun with it.
If you are somehow not familiar with the wellknown franchise of Transformers it is a huge story about robots that are able to transform into vehicles and are fighting a war spanning generations. You have the bad guys The Decepticons and the good guys The Autobots. Now youre essentially set to start this movie because it pretty much disregards the original series which plays in the favor of firsttime viewers.
To not spoil too much about the movie I will sum it up as such: A huge planeteating orb called Unicron is threatening the existence of whatever robot life strikes its fancy and it is the Autobots task to defeat that giant. So we embark on a heroes journey with many battles against Decepticons weird planets with twisted justice systems and garbage dumps with robot spacepirates.
If this premise doesnt already sound awesome to you please bear with me as I explain the merit of this movie in the next sections.
For a spinoff of a childrens series this movie is quite dark. Apparently controversially so with Hasbro receiving numerous complaints from parents about their kids supposed trauma. It is quite a bold move to Thats just not something you typically see in a childrens show. This contributes to the feeling that youre not watching just a simple childrens toy commercial it dares to buck conventions.
The script is one of my favorite things about this movie. While its cheesy there is just something very memorable about it. After a second watch I managed to memorize most of the dialogue. With absolute banger lines such as Bah weep gra na weep ninni bong Grimlock need new strategy and my personal favorite I have got better things to do tonight than DIE. The dialogue is so offkilter you cant hold it in contempt for this court. The movie was originally released in Dub with some notable voice actors such as Orson Welles playing Unicron his last role before death go figure.

I cannot talk about this movie without mentioning the animation which is unbelievably good. It captures the chaos of the battlefield perfectly and pretty much defines the unhinged nature of this movie from the getgo. If you are at all a fan of the 80s OVAs please check this out. Theres some very talented staff on here most striking to me is Satoshi Urushihara the soon to be key animator for Akira at the time. Even if you arent particularly a fan of the 80s look I would say that the movie has aged extremely well. The movie is worth a watch for the cool animation alone even if thats not its only merit.

And now possibly the best thing about this movie: the soundtrack. I will go on record to say that this is probably my favorite soundtrack for an anime. The movie almost feels like an long music video. Whenever there is something exciting happening youre damn near sure to have a banging tune playing over it. I really enjoyed the crazy mood these songs give to the movie such as the awesome rock rendition of the original Transformers theme theme or Dare to be stupid playing over the ridiculous pirate dance scene. You listen to any of these songs and you remember exactly at which point these are used in the movie further adding to memorability.
If you are looking to watch an easy movie with lots of cool action animation and an amazing OST AND youre down for cheesy dialogue give this one a go.
